The importance of recruitment skills

The importance of recruitment skills

The recruiting process is full of high expectations on the part of recruiters and candidates. The former hope to find resources that meet precise company requirements and needs, the latter trust in their CV and in the recognition of their skills by a company that satisfies their need for fulfilment, growth and belonging.

From this point of view, In-recruiting is committed to the enhancement of skills and has made them a fundamental component of personnel recruitment and selection activities, with obvious advantages for companies and candidates.

What role do skills play in recruiting?

In the labour market, a distinction is often made between hard skills and soft skills. Hard skills are technical competences and skills, acquired through study, training and professional experience and usually demonstrable in practice. Soft skills are personal ‘attitudes’, linked to character and can be perceived through interaction with others.

The identification of skills is the first step – together with the recognition of the main tasks to be carried out and the demands of the company to be fulfilled – that the recruiter or the HR team must take before drawing up the job advertisement for a vacancy.

On the other hand, also from the candidate’s point of view, it is important to know what one’s strengths are in order to highlight them in the CV and make them relevant in the pre-screening phase.

Customising the skills field for companies

The skills field is one of the new features introduced by In-recruiting. It is included by default in the options that any company can activate when they choose to integrate our Applicant Tracking System (ATS) into their recruitment process.

How do I activate it?

Activation is simple and intuitive: just go to Settings in your reserved area, select Customisations and activate/deactivate the section in your Web Forms. Thanks to a modern and always up-to-date graphic interface, you can customise the positioning of the various form fields by setting the order you prefer.

How does it work?

Among its many advantages, activating and customising the skills field for companies allows you to:

  • Carry out targeted research on skills

This is a fundamental aspect for the recruiter or HR team that is about to start a recruiting activity. In this sense, it will be possible to carry out a search based on the skills that are considered necessary to fill a given position. Therefore, skills become the main filter to orientate the search for candidates.

In addition, by filling in this field, the automatic suggestion will propose other similar and/or alternative skills to those already entered, which will be useful to refine the search.

Let’s take an example: let’s assume that your company is looking for a Web Developer. All the recruiter needs to do is access the candidate search section and enter the skills he is looking for in the skills field, for example Web frontend. The automatic suggestion will propose to the recruiter further technical skills that could improve the search, e.g. C++, Json, Javascript, CSS.

The result will be a list of highly qualified candidates who meet specific research objectives.

  • Act on the modification of the candidate’s profile

The company that has activated the personalisation of skills can also act on the modification of the candidate’s profile: it can add and validate skills or insert similar ones based on their CVs.

The advantages of personalising the skills field for candidates

Candidates who wish to submit their CV for a job advertisement can benefit from activating and customising this field.

If the company has activated the personalisation of skills, the candidate can enter up to 15 skills when filling in the registration form when applying for a job advertisement (or later when accessing his/her profile). In this case too, the automatic suggestion will propose skills in line with those already possessed in order to refine the application and facilitate the appearance of one’s profile among the search results.

A further advantage of the functionality introduced by In-recruiting is the possibility of adding skills that are not included by default in the system. These will be accepted as ‘external suggestions’ made by users and used to refine this feature and improve our product.
